Who Am I?
Hey there! My name is Sian and I’m an LGBTQ+ scientist that dreams of working in the space sector, conducting research that will further our search for extraterrestrial life. I completed my PhD in Earth Sciences and Astrobiology with Dr. Greg Slater at McMaster University in June 2024. My research involves using an interdisciplinary approach to help answer fundamental questions regarding the search for life in space, and the origin of life here on Earth. By detecting and characterizing microorganisms living at the very limits of terrestrial life as we know it, we can better understand where and how organisms might live on other planets such as Mars, or moons such as Titan. Additionally, I am interested in the role mineral matrices may play in the preservation of biosignatures such as phospholipids and how this can increase their persistence in the environment.
In my spare time I contribute to research and conservation of migratory birds through the Beaverhill Bird Observatory. I also have a wide range of other hobbies including:
Wildlife photography - See some of my favorite photos here.
Table-top roleplaying games - Check out my guest spot on the Kill Every Monster Podcast!
Video games
Crocheting (mostly dinosaur stuffed animals!)
Both traditional and digital art
